I recall that the "piccaninnies" in the TV advert even came with a bone through their noses (or did I imagine that). I believe that the latest adverts still use "Lees, Lees, more if you please" slogan.

Back then, the term "Piccaninny" referred to a small African child and did not have the racist connotation it later attracted. Similar to the Robinson's Golly. It never ever occurred to me that it was wrong as we never saw anyone of a different race when growing up. The only Africans I saw was in my grandfather's Gazetteer which dated from the 1920s (bare breasted women, as was the apparent norm).

60/70s Scotland was split down sectarian lines and not racially. The only person with a darker skin tone was the "Paki" grocer, if I was taken into town by mother.

Changed days, indeed. Far be it from me to defend the use of offensive terms or phrases. But let me play Devils advocate for this one. Is it possible, during those innocent times, even in Glasgow, that the word was used to denote children? If you wiki the word pickaninny, you will see that the Oxford English records use of the word in that context as early as 1653. And when you consider the context of the word's use in the song "For piccaninnies and grandpapas", it could back up that theory. I grew up in Glasgow during the 70s and I certainly do not remember any TV advert depicting black people on an island. And I watched a lot of TV. I would definitely have remembered that one.

I do remember eating Macaroon bars as a kid and I loved them. I still buy them very occasionally as a treat to myself. More if you please!
